The importance of installing the right passive fire protection

    People safety first, then property

Fire safety measures are all about keeping people safe. In the case of a fire, passive fire measures should offer people protection from contact with high-temperature surfaces. They also assist fire-fighters as they move to control a fire.

    Why fire-safe compliance is essential

Passive fire protection measures are essential to reduce heat transfer and limit the spread of a fire and to protect assets. These include service penetrations, such as ductwork, plumbing and air conditioning pipes. By containing the damage, passive fire measures help limit the cost of repairs and rebuild.

What you must do to be compliant?

    • The National Construction Code (NCC) specifies that all insulation used in pipes, ductwork systems, and vessels include safe levels of non-combustibility.
    • Check with our expert technical team to ensure you’re specifying within the latest regulations.

Choose from Baron’s range of high-integrity, non-combustible, and compliant fire protection insulation materials

The benefits of high-performance acoustic insulation

      A more comfortable sound environment

Minimising the noise that comes from pipes and machinery within an industrial space is simply good design. Acoustic insulation absorbs and blocks sound waves, reducing the transfer of noise transfer, and helping to create a quieter, more comfortable environment.

Insulating for sound makes people more productive

Within a commercial building, noise can adversely affect productivity and overall wellbeing. Whether it’s in school, hospital, or in a workplace environment, acoustic insulation helps dampen noise and minimise noise transfer.

      Pipe insulation for sound control

Pipe-lagging around ductwork, wastewater, waste supply, and stormwater pipes can also isolate noise emitted from pipes. Effective acoustic lagging uses a heavy barrier (such as loaded vinyl) isolated from the pipe with foam rubber or fibreglass. It should also extend along the full length of a pipe, leaving no gaps.

Acoustic insulation to control noise from services

Sound barriers help control noise from cooling fans, transformers and other noise producing electrical equipment in electrical plantrooms. Insulation is also effective in isolating sound in lift shafts and other services areas within a building.

      Acoustic insulation that’s guaranteed compliant

At Baron Insulation, we’ll help you choose the most effective acoustic insulation materials to do the job and satisfy all National Construction Code (NCC) standards for building and plumbing applications.

      Baron-Insulation-Wavebar-Quadzero-Loaded-Vinyl-Barrier

      How do you measure noise?

The sound absorption performance of a material is measured by its noise reduction coefficient (NRC). The NRC rating is affected by the type of absorbent material, its thickness and density, and its mounting method. The NRC figure ranges from 0.00—perfectly reflective—to 1.00—perfectly absorptive. To measure noise and work out what you need for your project, use our noise calculator.

Which material works best for effective acoustic insulation?

Commercial and industrial building designers specify different materials, such as glasswool, rockwool, polyester fibre, natural wool, or cellulose fibre, to absorb sound. Here at Baron Insulation, you’ll find a whole range of effective sound absorption and soundproofing solutions to suit your commercial building or plumbing project.

What are the benefits of effective pipe insulation?

        Controls condensation

Thermal pipe insulation has an important role in preventing condensation on cold or chilling pipes. Condensation can cause pipes to corrode and rust prematurely, leading to leaks in the piping or pipe fittings. Leaking pipes may result in safety hazards (such as puddles on the floor), and cause damage to a building’s structure and contents. It can also create conditions for mould growth, creating health hazards for building occupants.

        Slows down pipe freezing

In some locations, pipes are exposed to extremes of temperature both inside and outside a building. In very cold environments, the water running through those pipes can freeze, expanding the pipes and causing the pipe system to fail. Pipe insulation increases the time it takes for a pipe to freeze in cold conditions, reducing the risk of compromising the pipe system.

        Saves energy

Heat loss occurs when there’s a significant difference between the ambient temperature and the temperature inside the pipe. Thermal pipe insulation creates thermal resistance and reduces the heat flow and therefore the loss of energy. In extreme temperatures, thicker insulation will help prevent unnecessary cooling or the loss of both heat and energy. In well-insulated buildings, there’s less need for thermal pipe insulation.

        Increases occupational safety

Pipework is made for conditions of extreme temperatures. But unless pipe surfaces are protected by insulation, they can be hazardous to touch. Insulating pipes will help minimise the risk of workplace burns by absorbing the surface heat of pipe systems.

        Provides acoustic control

Pipework can carry disturbing noise from one part of a building to another (in the case of waste-water pipework routed within a building, for example). Acoustic insulation, such as pipe lagging, can reduce the transfer of noise (vibration). Acting as a high-density sound barrier, use pipe insulation in ductwork, valves, fan housings and all types of pipes within buildings.
